Siemens exhibited SiberProtect cybersecurity platform and Real-Time Location System (RTLS) at PACK EXPO in Las Vegas, USA (Las Vegas Packaging Exhibition is one of the largest and most influential packaging shows in North America. Hosted by PMMI, the Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, since its establishment in 1995, it has become the largest packaging exhibition in North America and is a highly influential professional exhibition among international packaging shows).
SiberProtect is an Operational Technology (OT) threat detection system that isolates or quarantines plant and field assets after reliably identifying cyber attacks. According to Siemens, the system runs in real-time— independent of site networks—and is capable of responding to potential threats in milliseconds. After receiving cybersecurity notifications, SiberProtect initiates a series of predetermined device management operations designed to protect high-value or mission-critical assets and initiate additional response requirements. To achieve this latter goal, notifications are communicated to operators and other stakeholders via lights, alarms, email, and text messages.
Siemens RTLS technology is used to track the location of assets, containers, vehicles, and other materials in indoor and outdoor environments. To achieve tracking, infrastructure equipment is placed throughout facilities, functioning similarly to satellites used for triangulation in GPS networks. Once infrastructure equipment is in place, transponders are connected to any assets or materials that end users wish to track. Tracking data can then be input into MES or other systems. A potential application of RTLS technology is combining tracking data with geofencing (virtual boundaries around real-world geographic areas). By using geofencing, alerts can be triggered when tracked assets or materials enter or leave certain areas.
