The International Federation of Robotics announces China's industrial robot market data for 2021, showing strong market growth with installation volume reaching 243,300 units in 2021, a 44% year-on-year increase, setting a new record.

"After the pandemic, China led global recovery and accounted for half of global robot installations in 2021," said Marina Bill, President of the International Federation of Robotics. "Growth was strong across all industries, with electrical and electronics as the dominant sector—growing 30% to reach 81,600 units. The automotive sector also saw strong recovery. This was mainly driven by China's electric vehicle manufacturing. It grew 89% in 2021, installing 50,700 units."
In China, population aging has caused labor shortages and driven the development of robot automation. Earlier this year, the government announced continued robotization of industry. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released a five-year plan for the robotics industry in Beijing, focusing on promoting innovation—making China a global leader in robotics technology and industry advancement.
Meanwhile, national authorities aim to increase employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for university graduates. In June, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security announced 18 new professions including "Robot Engineering Technician". This specialty focuses on the research and development of robot control algorithms and operating systems, as well as the use of digital simulation technology.
"China still has great potential for further growth," said Marina Bill. "China's manufacturing robot density reached 246 industrial robots per 10,000 employees, ranking ninth globally in 2020. Ten years ago, China's robot density was only 15 units."
