SICK has launched the safeRS3, a next-generation safety 3D radar system designed to achieve maximum productivity by providing highly reliable safety access protection for workers in hazardous industrial areas, including robotic cells. The robust radar detection principle is well-suited for heavy industry or harsh outdoor environments that may challenge traditional optical detection systems.
SICK safeRS3 combines first-class safety radar technology as an electrically sensitive 3D protective device for safety personnel detection. With higher measurement accuracy, it can protect personnel in fixed applications to meet PLd or SIL2 according to ISO 13849-1 and IEC 62061.
With the launch of safeRS3, SICK has achieved a longer 5m protection zone range with a spread angle of up to 100° and the ability to configure up to four protection zones. A cybersecurity version with PROFINET control has been introduced for easy integration into PROFIsafe networks.

safeRS3 extends the versatility of safety radar to more industrial applications. As a Category 3 device, SICK safeRS3 can be used for robotic applications compliant with ISO 10218-2.
With SICK safeRS3, operators can avoid unnecessary machine downtime while continuing to protect personnel. Safe automatic restart functionality helps ensure maximum productivity for complex machine cells, including those with robots. Validation view helps operators see real-time site violation locations, enabling quick identification of false trips.
The 60GHz radar detection principle of SICK safeRS3 ensures it can filter out particles or contaminants in dirty or high-humidity conditions. SICK safeRS3 is unaffected by dim or bright light. Despite dirt, dust clouds, wood chips, plastic particles, debris, sparks, or steam, heavy rain, or moisture, it operates accurately.
Therefore, SICK safeRS3 operates between -40°C to +60°C, providing reliable protection for heavy industrial facilities including steel production, wood or plastic manufacturing, or outdoor environments such as gantry cranes operating in bulk material handling facilities, mines, or quarries.
Due to its technology and 3D conical coverage, SICK safeRS3 is ideal for dangerous areas with complex terrain. For example, steps, platforms, and supports cause shadow effects, making comprehensive coverage difficult with laser scanners that detect in 2D planes.
Each SICK safeRS3 radar sensor features an extremely robust IP67 housing, configurable up to six sensors. The system has adjustable working range and selectable opening angles, adaptable to almost any environment.
For the PROFINET version, standard Ethernet connection also supports configuration, diagnostics, and Modbus integration. Alternatively, customers can purchase an economical controller with local I/O and 2 pairs of OSSDs for configuration and diagnostics via USB-C.
