How can automated packaging equipment be used to achieve grid-style (crisscross) strapping of cartons? What key considerations should be taken into account when implementing grid-pattern strapping?
Grid-style (or “well-pattern”) strapping is a common end-of-line packaging solution frequently used in production environments. It is one of the standard case sealing and strapping methods. This technique typically uses PP (polypropylene) strapping applied by a strapping machine. Depending on packaging requirements, items can be strapped in various configurations—such as two parallel bands, a single cross (“X”), a full grid (“井” or crisscross pattern), or an “H” (工-shaped) layout.

Grid-style strapping can be accomplished using several types of strapping machines. Based on automation level: • Both semi-automatic and automatic strapping machines require some manual intervention to complete the grid pattern. • In contrast, a fully automatic strapping machine can perform complete grid-style strapping on cartons without any human assistance. For high-volume production, we recommend integrating a fully automatic strapping system into your production line to achieve consistent, hands-free grid-pattern bundling.

There are two common layout configurations for grid-style strapping lines: inline (straight-line) and L-shaped layouts.
Inline (Straight-Line) Grid Strapping Layout: Two strapping machines are positioned parallel to each other. A lift-and-rotate mechanism turns the carton 90° between strapping cycles. However, due to inertia, the carton may not always return perfectly centered after rotation. In such cases, a side-squaring (or alignment) unit is often necessary—without it, the final strapping quality may be compromised.

L-Shaped Grid Strapping Layout: The two strapping machines are installed perpendicular to each other. A right-angle pusher mechanism transfers and reorients the carton between stations. This configuration is another widely adopted solution for automated grid-pattern strapping in industrial settings.
