What types of stainless steel case erectors are available, and what grades of stainless steel are commonly used?
Automated packaging equipment is becoming increasingly common in industrial settings, and downstream automatic case erectors are no exception. Standard case erectors are typically constructed from powder-coated carbon steel. However, food and pharmaceutical manufacturers often have stricter requirements for equipment appearance and hygiene, and therefore commonly specify stainless steel construction.
In the packaging machinery market, the two most common stainless steel grades are 304 and 201. The key difference lies in their nickel content and mechanical toughness: 201 stainless steel is more brittle and prone to cracking, whereas 304 offers superior corrosion resistance and ductility. Grade 304 stainless steel is further categorized into NO.1 (hot-rolled) and 2B (cold-rolled) finishes. The 2B cold-rolled finish refers to stainless steel that has been cold-rolled at room temperature to achieve a precise final thickness. Compared to hot-rolled (NO.1) sheet, cold-rolled 2B stainless steel offers tighter dimensional tolerances, a smoother and brighter surface finish, and enhanced mechanical properties—particularly better formability and machinability.
