Soft Robotics, known for its soft gripper technology, has launched m GripAI—an intelligent software platform that combines proprietary 3D vision, artificial intelligence, and adaptive soft gripping to pick, place, and sort delicate, irregular, and bulk items across the food, prepared meals, fresh produce, and bakery industries.
According to Soft Robotics, m GripAI enhances traditional industrial robots with true hand-eye coordination, unlocking their potential in labor-intensive processes. The company predicts, “This technological breakthrough will ultimately drive widespread adoption of automation, leading to a more resilient food supply chain capable of producing more safe products with less waste and lower operational costs.”
The m GripAI Perception Module acts as the system’s “eyes.” It captures high-resolution 3D images and sends them to the Intelligence Module for processing. This Intelligence Module serves as the “brain” behind m GripAI, translating visual data into precise movements for the robotic arm and gripper.
The system’s “hands” are the specialized m Grip soft grippers, which work in tandem with robotic arms (compatible with virtually all industrial robot brands) to handle fragile and highly variable products at speeds up to 90 picks per minute. Typical applications include picking food items that are touching, overlapping, or stacked on conveyors, as well as 3D bin-picking tasks. The grippers are rated IP69K and constructed from food-grade materials, ensuring compliance with stringent hygiene standards.
