Maintenance and Care of Automatic Flap-Folding Case Sealers

Automatic flap-folding case sealers, also known as flap folders or flap-sealing machines, are packaging devices that automatically fold and seal the top flaps of cartons. They are a preferred sealing solution for small and medium-sized enterprises. While these machines can operate reliably for extended periods with minimal issues, proper maintenance is essential to avoid unexpected downtime and ensure smooth operation. Regular mechanical maintenance not only enhances equipment efficiency but also significantly reduces the likelihood of malfunctions—a win-win practice that enables early detection and timely resolution of potential problems. Like other sealing machines, automatic flap-folding case sealers have relatively complex mechanisms. Therefore, operators should possess basic maintenance knowledge to better understand and care for their equipment.

   Blade Replacement

   Loosen the retaining nut on the flap sealer, remove the old blade, install a new one, and securely tighten the nut.

   Conveyor Belt Replacement

   To replace the side drive conveyor belt, first loosen the two mounting nuts on the belt cover and the adjustment bolt at the front of the belt holder. Remove the belt cover, take out the old belt, and install a new one. After reassembly, adjust the tension of both conveyor belts individually until properly tightened, then lock them in place.

   Machine Cleaning and Lubrication

   To ensure optimal performance, all moving parts of the automatic flap-folding sealer should be lubricated weekly with ISO VG 30 oil (or equivalent #30 machine oil).

   Regular Oil Cleaning

   Although the sealer itself does not require frequent oiling, certain critical components—such as transmission parts—do need periodic lubrication. During operation, this lubricant can become contaminated with dust and may be transferred by operator contact to other areas. Therefore, operators must regularly clean excess or dirty oil from these components.

   Periodic Inspection of Wear Parts

   Wear parts are components prone to deterioration during normal use. Operators should pay close attention to these parts and keep appropriate spare components on hand to prevent unexpected failures that could disrupt production.

   Flap Sealer Maintenance Schedule

   1. Tighten all screws every 3 months.

   2. Lubricate the chains every 3 months.

   3. Wipe the cylinder rods regularly to prevent dust from accumulating and entering the piston over time.
